A product title is not a sensor

Four related retail listings name PM2.5, CO₂ or HCHO in the title. Only the body text, and only where it names a principle, can be treated as a clue.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A title that lists PM2.5, PM10, CO₂, TVOC and HCHO is a catalogue string. It is not evidence that those gases or particles are being measured. On pages observed on 23 September 2026, one related shop’s body and FAQ called the instrument a laser particle monitor and denied a gas or climate sensor, while the title still said CO₂.

Four blank hang-tags above a single unmarked sensor block.
Explanatory still-life: extra title tags are not extra sensors. Not an AirMeasure UK teardown.

What was on the related shop pages

Four commercially related shops were read on 23 September 2026. The shop names appear as plain text. This note is not a buying list. None of those pages published a handbook PDF, a chip identity or a downloadable CSV. Customer reviews on those pages followed a template and are not used as measurements.

Shop nameWhat the body actually supportedWhat stayed a title clue
airmeter.co.ukClaims for PM1.0 / PM2.5 / PM10, AQI and temperature-humidity; range written as 0–999 µg/m³; USB-C; the page said it is not a CO, CO₂ or smoke alarmLaser scattering, Plantower, PM10 size algorithm, calibration
temtopair.co.ukBody and FAQ: a laser particle sensor for PM2.5 and AQI; “particle monitor rather than a gas or climate sensor”; no app or Wi‑Fi requiredCO₂ and Bluetooth in the title and meta
temtopquality.co.ukA title listing PM2.5 / PM10 / formaldehyde. The specification table mixed in “All skin types” and “Premium, naturally derived”Every sensing principle; whether the listing matches a named Temtop model; TVOC
vibtest.co.ukThe product page wrote electrochemical; range 0.000–1.999 mg/m³; resolution 0.001 mg/m³. A review mentioned a ten-minute outdoor fresh-air zero. The catalogue brand was ZYKYCXChip identity, traceable calibration, selectivity

Those observations are catalogue readings. They are not AirMeasure UK measurements, and they do not make any of those shops a verified instrument.

A named principle is the minimum

Adafruit’s SCD-30 page can write “NDIR” and contrast it with SGP30 estimation because the module is identified. AirGradient’s photoacoustic note can compare SenseAir S8 with SCD40/41 because both sides are named. HSE’s workplace page asks for NDIR on a portable carbon-dioxide monitor. A shop title that merely prints “CO₂” does not meet that bar.

These notes do not treat those four listings as confirmed NDIR, photoacoustic, laser-particle or electrochemical instruments. A handbook, a teardown photograph or the manufacturer’s sensor document is not on those pages. The commercial disclosure keeps the ownership relationship visible.

What this page does not conclude

This page does not rank the shops. It does not say that a title word is false in every case — only that it is unused as evidence until the body names a principle. It does not say a room is safe, polluted or compliant. Consumer readings are not a medical result.

Sources and scope

Sources checked on 23 September 2026. Numbered references point to the original publishers. Their sample measurements are not AirMeasure UK measurements. Manufacturer, tutorial and official material is identified separately.

  1. Adafruit Learn, Adafruit SCD-30 NDIR CO₂ ↗Tutorial stating the SCD-30 is NDIR true carbon dioxide: “Unlike the SGP30, this sensor isn’t approximating it from VOC.” Field recalibration needs a known concentration. Automatic self-calibration is written as needing regular exposure near 400 ppm, continuous power, and about seven qualifying intervals of at least 18 hours (about five days). Component retailer, repeating a manufacturer specification.
  2. AirGradient, Photo-Acoustic vs NDIR CO₂ sensors ↗Achim Haug, 22 September 2024. Manufacturer science post. Indoor two-week tracks of SenseAir S8 and SCD40/41 were close. Outdoors, two S8 units correlated at R² 0.90 and two SCD units at 0.36; versus a reference, S8 about 0.64–0.69 and SCD about 0.16–0.24. eCO₂ from SGP30 is written as highly unreliable; a deodorant can raise it. These are AirGradient’s tests, not an independent laboratory and not AirMeasure UK numbers.
  3. HSE, Using CO2 monitors ↗UK workplace ventilation page. Prefers NDIR on a portable device; head height; more than 50 cm from people; away from doors, windows and supply vents. A single snapshot can mislead. Persistently above 1500 ppm is written as a sign of poor ventilation. In a room with an air cleaner, carbon dioxide does not stand in for ventilation. Workplace guidance, not a home health standard and not an instrument certificate.
